Overview

Wonderfil is a Santa Cruz-based refill technology company pioneering autonomous, container-agnostic refill stations for personal and home care products. Our machines are deployed in Whole Foods Markets and universities across California, making refill more accessible, affordable, and fun!

As we scale production in our new, expanded facility starting April 1, 2025, we’re seeking an engineer who is eager to tackle the plastic waste crisis and contribute to climate solutions through innovative hardware design. If you’re passionate about sustainability and excited to apply your engineering skills to a real-world impact, we’d love to hear from you!

The Role

Wonderfil is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to enhance the production efficiency of our refill stations. You will work closely with our engineering team to prototype, iterate, test, and implement design improvements that optimize manufacturability and performance.

In this role, you will also contribute to refining our production processes and improving documentation to support scalable manufacturing.

Our ideal candidate has hands-on fabrication experience, such as working in a machine shop, woodshop, or as a technician, and is eager to apply that expertise to streamline production and enhance mechanical designs. We’re looking for someone who prioritizes user-centered design and is motivated by work that has a positive environmental impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design improvements by optimizing performance, durability, and manufacturability.

  • Develop and iterate on existing systems, as well as design and integrate new mechanical components.

  • Evaluate, prototype, and validate fabrication methods to improve efficiency and production scalability.

  • Generate and maintain detailed documentation for mechanical designs, including drawings, specifications, and assembly instructions.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • 2+ years of CAD experience, preferably with SolidWorks, for part and assembly design, drafting, and tolerancing.

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.

  • Hands-on experience bringing a physical product from concept to production, such as in automotive, dispensing, vending systems, capstone projects, or engineering competitions.

  • Proven ability to iterate on prototype designs based on user testing, optimizing for cost, usability, manufacturability, and reliability.

  • Practical experience with mechanical assembly and a strong understanding of fabrication techniques (e.g., machining, welding, adhesives, fastening).

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, with hands-on experience using lathes, CNC machines, 3D printers, and laser cutters.

  • Passion for sustainability and a strong interest in reducing plastic waste through innovative engineering solutions.

  • (Preferred) Experience with fluid mechanics, including coursework or practical applications.

  • (Preferred) Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to streamline production.
